Applying the 4 Steps of Interaction Design to Website Design

Interaction design is relevant to all kinds of systems. In this blog, we’ll see how you can apply its four steps to website design.

1. Establish requirements

The first step of interaction design is to establish the requirements of your system. In essence, you want to identify what you know and what you don’t know.

In regard to website design, you should think about your user experience from the very beginning. Consider what you need for your site to function and engage users.

2. Create alternatives

In the second stage of interaction design, you start to create possible alternatives. These aren’t prototypes yet, but rather less-detailed concepts.

Here, you can start thinking of what your site’s layout will look like and what features it will have. Brainstorm a few concepts and let them sink in.

3. Prototyping

The prototyping stage is where you get your hands dirty. You come up with a possible design and see what users think of it.

It’s important to have a prototype of your website before you release it. This is your time to find bugs and iron out any wrinkles.

4. Evaluating

And finally, the most important step of interaction design is the last one. In your evaluation, you’ll get crucial feedback from users on how to improve your system.

According to a recent Forbes article, this is everything with respect to website design. You need feedback from users to optimize the user experience:

“Knowing what users are doing on your sites will create the opportunity to identify ideal areas for further development, giving you a website that is optimally crafted for your customers. The information acquired by monitoring user experience is an invaluable asset to any business driven to improve customer experience.”

At this point, you have a functional website with input from real people. It’s now ready for release.
